Abstract – A series of satellite-derived sea surface wind (SSW) and sea surface temperature (SST) images in the East China Sea (ECS) during the period from 1997 to 2001 are used to determine their interannual variability, especially the impact of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The first Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) mode of the SSW anomaly data indicates that the 1997-1998 El Niño event may weaken the SSW in the ECS compared with the 1998-1999 La Niña year and even the following weaker La Niña years1999-2000 and 2000-2001. The EOF mode 1 of the SST anomaly data emphasizes that the continuous positive SST anomaly occurred from November 1997 to February 1999, and a following negative SST anomaly extended to August 2000. Through the comparison to the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), it is suggested that ENSO could affect the SST field in the ECS with a 9-month delay.

Nutrient compositional differentiation in the muscle of wild, inshore and offshore cage-cultured large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea)

The proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids composition in the muscle of wild, inshore and offshore cage-cultured large yellow croaker, Pseudosciaena crocea (Richardson, 1846), were determined to identify nutritional differences. Wild fish groups showed highest content of moisture and crude protein, but the lowest lipid content. Offshore cage-cultured fish showed significantly higher...

China’s Maritime Interest and the Great Game at Seas

Linking China’s interest in the maritime waters arises from the geo-strategic importance of Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs) vital to the oil supply of the country. China is building strategic relationships and developing a naval capability to establish a forward presence along the SLOCs that connect China to the Middle East and to Africa. The entire stretch includes South China Sea, Indian ...

Impacts of Ocean Warming on China's Fisheries Catches: An Application of “Mean Temperature of the Catch” Concept

Ocean warming can strongly impact marine fisheries; notably, it can cause the “mean temperature of the catch” (MTC) to increase, an indicator of the tropicalization of fisheries catches. In this contribution, we explore MTC changes in three large marine ecosystems (LMEs) along China’s coasts, i.e., the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea LMEs, and their relationships to shifts of se...

South China Sea throughflow impact on the Indonesian throughflow

[1] In 2008–2009 the Makassar throughflow profile changed dramatically: the characteristic thermocline velocity maximum increased from 0.7 to 0.9 m/sec and shifted from 140 m to 70 m, amounting to a 47% increase in the transport of warmer water between 50 and 150 m during the boreal summer. HYCOM output indicates that ENSO induced change of the South China Sea (SCS) throughflow into the Indones...

Unraveling El Niño’s impact on the East Asian Monsoon and Yangtze River summer flooding

Strong El Niño events are followed by massive summer monsoon flooding over the Yangtze River basin (YRB), home to about a third of the population in China. Although the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) provides the main source of seasonal climate predictability for many parts of the Earth, the mechanisms of its connection to the East Asian monsoon remain largely elusive. For instance, the tr...
